Dementia Awareness Trainer Course FAQs

Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of conditions that affect the brain, causing a decline in memory, thinking, behaviour, and the ability to perform everyday activities. The most common types are Alzheimer's disease (60–80% of cases), vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Dementia is not a normal part of ageing.
Around 900,000 people in the UK are currently living with dementia, a figure projected to reach 1.6 million by 2040. Dementia is the leading cause of death in England and Wales, and the cost to the UK economy is estimated at over £34 billion per year.
Person-centred care is an approach that treats each person with dementia as a unique individual, focusing on their strengths, abilities, preferences, and life history rather than their diagnosis. It involves the person in decisions about their care, maintains their dignity and identity, and recognises the importance of relationships and the social environment.
Your Dementia Awareness Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Dementia care guidance and best practice are updated regularly, so renewal training ensures your knowledge remains current and aligned with the latest evidence.
Dementia care in the UK is governed by the Care Act 2014 (which places duties on local authorities to support people with dementia), the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (which protects the rights of people who may lack capacity to make decisions), and the Health and Social Care Act 2008. The National Dementia Strategy and NICE guidelines also provide a framework for care.
Effective communication with people living with dementia includes: using simple language and short sentences; speaking slowly and clearly; using non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and touch; validation therapy (acknowledging the person's emotional reality); reminiscence therapy (using memories from the past to connect); and avoiding arguing or correcting the person.
Yes — the Dementia Awareness Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited dementia awareness training to staff in any care setting, including care homes, NHS hospitals, domiciliary care agencies, GP surgeries, and community services. You will receive all the training materials and resources you need to start delivering training immediately.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60–80% of all dementia cases. Dementia is the broader term for a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's is one specific disease that causes dementia; other causes include vascular disease, Lewy body disease, and frontotemporal degeneration.
