Epilepsy Awareness Trainer Course FAQs

Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterised by recurrent seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It affects around 600,000 people in the UK — approximately 1 in 100. Epilepsy is not a single condition; it is a spectrum of disorders with many different causes, types, and severities.
Around 600,000 people in the UK have epilepsy, approximately 1 in 100 people. Each year, around 87 people are diagnosed with epilepsy every day. Epilepsy can affect anyone at any age, but it is most commonly diagnosed in children and people over 65.
Seizures are classified as focal (starting in one part of the brain) or generalised (involving the whole brain). Generalised seizures include tonic-clonic seizures (formerly called grand mal), absence seizures, myoclonic seizures, atonic seizures, and tonic seizures. Each type has different characteristics and first aid requirements.
For a tonic-clonic seizure: protect the person from injury by moving hard or sharp objects away; cushion their head; time the seizure; do not restrain them or put anything in their mouth; after the convulsions stop, place them in the recovery position; stay with them until they are fully recovered; call 999 if the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, if it is their first seizure, or if they do not regain consciousness.
Your Epilepsy Awareness Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Epilepsy treatment guidelines and first aid protocols are updated periodically, so renewal training ensures your knowledge remains current and evidence-based.
Schools have a duty to support pupils with epilepsy under the Equality Act 2010 (which protects pupils with disabilities from discrimination), the Children and Families Act 2014, and the statutory guidance 'Supporting pupils at school with medical conditions' (DfE, 2015). Schools must have an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) for pupils with epilepsy.
SUDEP stands for Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy. It is the sudden, unexpected, non-traumatic, and non-drowning death of a person with epilepsy, with or without evidence of a seizure. SUDEP is rare but serious — around 1,000 people in the UK die from SUDEP each year. Trainers must be aware of SUDEP and how to discuss it sensitively with delegates.
The Epilepsy Awareness Trainer course covers awareness of epilepsy and seizure first aid. Teaching emergency medication administration (such as buccal midazolam or rectal diazepam) requires a separate specialist qualification. Abertay Training offers dedicated medication administration training for those who need to teach emergency rescue medication.
