Equality and Diversity Trainer Course FAQs

The Equality Act 2010 is the primary legislation in the UK that protects people from discrimination, harassment, and victimisation in the workplace and wider society. It replaced and consolidated previous anti-discrimination laws including the Race Relations Act, Sex Discrimination Act, and Disability Discrimination Act. It applies to employers, service providers, education providers, and public bodies.
The nine protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010 are: age; disability; gender reassignment; marriage and civil partnership; pregnancy and maternity; race (including colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin); religion or belief; sex; and sexual orientation. Discrimination based on any of these characteristics is unlawful.
Unconscious bias refers to automatic, unintentional stereotypes or assumptions about groups of people that affect our decisions and behaviours without us being aware of them. It can influence recruitment decisions, performance reviews, and workplace interactions. Training helps delegates recognise and challenge their own unconscious biases to create fairer workplaces.
Direct discrimination occurs when someone is treated less favourably than another person because of a protected characteristic — for example, refusing to promote a woman because she might become pregnant. Indirect discrimination occurs when a policy or practice applies to everyone but puts people with a particular protected characteristic at a disadvantage — for example, requiring all staff to work on Saturdays, which may disadvantage Jewish employees.
Your Equality and Diversity Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Equality legislation and workplace diversity best practice evolve regularly, so renewal training ensures your knowledge remains current and legally compliant.
While there is no specific legal requirement to provide equality and diversity training, employers have a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 to prevent discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) recommends training as a key measure to meet this duty. Public sector organisations also have a Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) to advance equality of opportunity.
A reasonable adjustment is a change an employer must make to remove or reduce a disadvantage experienced by a disabled employee or job applicant. Examples include providing specialist equipment, adjusting working hours, allowing home working, or modifying duties. The duty to make reasonable adjustments applies only to disability, not to other protected characteristics.
Yes — the Equality and Diversity Trainer Award is applicable across all sectors including healthcare, education, retail, hospitality, construction, and the public sector. The Equality Act 2010 applies to all employers with one or more employees, so the training is universally relevant.
