Risk Assessor Course FAQs

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments for all work activities that may affect employees or others. Additional regulations require specific risk assessments for particular hazards, including COSHH (chemicals), Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992, and the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
The HSE's five-step risk assessment process is: (1) Identify the hazards — anything that may cause harm. (2) Decide who might be harmed and how — employees, contractors, visitors, members of the public. (3) Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions — consider existing controls and whether more is needed. (4) Record your findings and implement them — write down the significant findings and tell your staff. (5) Review your assessment and update if necessary — revisit when circumstances change.
The hierarchy of control is a framework for selecting the most effective risk control measures, in order of effectiveness: (1) Elimination — remove the hazard entirely. (2) Substitution — replace with something less hazardous. (3) Engineering controls — isolate people from the hazard. (4) Administrative controls — change the way people work. (5) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) — protect the worker. PPE is always the last resort, not the first response.
Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers with five or more employees must record the significant findings of their risk assessments in writing. Even for smaller employers, written records are strongly recommended as evidence of compliance. The written record should identify the hazards, the people at risk, and the control measures in place.
Your Risk Assessor Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Health and safety legislation and risk assessment best practice are updated regularly, so renewal training ensures your knowledge remains current and legally compliant.
A dynamic risk assessment is an ongoing, real-time assessment of risk carried out during an activity, particularly important for emergency services, lone workers, and any situation where circumstances change rapidly. It involves continuously observing the environment, identifying new hazards, evaluating the risks, and taking appropriate action. It complements but does not replace formal written risk assessments.
A COSHH assessment is a specific risk assessment required under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 for substances that may harm health. It identifies hazardous substances used or produced in the workplace, assesses the risk to health, and determines the control measures needed to prevent or adequately control exposure. COSHH assessments must be reviewed regularly and whenever there is a significant change.
Yes — the Risk Assessor Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited risk assessment training to staff in any sector, including construction, healthcare, manufacturing, education, hospitality, and office environments. Risk assessment is a legal requirement for all employers, making this qualification universally applicable and commercially valuable.
