Stress Management Trainer Course FAQs

Workplace stress is the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them at work. It occurs when people feel they cannot cope with the demands placed on them. Stress is not an illness, but it can lead to physical and mental health problems if not addressed. The HSE estimates that 17.1 million working days were lost to work-related stress, depression, or anxiety in 2022/23.
The HSE Management Standards identify six areas of work design that can lead to stress if not properly managed: (1) Demands — workload, work patterns, and the work environment. (2) Control — how much say the person has in the way they do their work. (3) Support — the encouragement, sponsorship, and resources provided by the organisation, line management, and colleagues. (4) Relationships — promoting positive working to avoid conflict and dealing with unacceptable behaviour. (5) Role — whether people understand their role within the organisation and whether the organisation ensures that they do not have conflicting roles. (6) Change — how organisational change is managed and communicated.
Yes — employers have a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 to assess and manage the risk of work-related stress. The Equality Act 2010 may also apply where stress is related to a disability. Failure to manage workplace stress can result in civil claims for personal injury, regulatory enforcement by the HSE, and reputational damage.
Signs of stress in the workplace include: increased absence and sickness rates; reduced productivity and performance; poor decision-making and errors; irritability, mood changes, and conflict with colleagues; difficulty concentrating and forgetfulness; physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and digestive problems; and withdrawal from social interaction. Early identification and intervention are key to preventing stress from escalating.
Your Stress Management Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Stress management research, guidance, and best practice evolve regularly, so renewal training ensures your knowledge remains current and evidence-based.
Stress is a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. It is usually temporary and resolves when the stressor is removed. Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, and feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. Burnout develops gradually over time and requires more intensive intervention than acute stress.
Effective coping strategies for workplace stress include: mindfulness and relaxation techniques (breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation); time management and prioritisation skills; assertiveness training; physical exercise and healthy lifestyle habits; social support and peer networks; cognitive reframing (changing unhelpful thought patterns); and problem-solving skills. The course covers a range of evidence-based strategies that delegates can teach to their staff.
Yes — the Stress Management Trainer Award is applicable across all sectors. Work-related stress affects employees in every industry, from healthcare and education to construction, retail, and the public sector. The course covers both individual coping strategies and organisational approaches to stress management, making it relevant to any workplace context.
