DSE Assessor Course FAQs

DSE assessor adjusting computer workstation ergonomics for an office workerThe Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002) require employers to assess the risks to 'users' of display screen equipment (DSE) — defined as workers who habitually use DSE as a significant part of their normal work. Employers must analyse workstations to assess and reduce risks, ensure workstations meet minimum requirements, plan work to provide breaks or changes of activity, arrange eye tests on request, and provide training and information. Failure to comply can result in HSE enforcement action.
There is no single mandatory qualification for DSE assessors in UK law, but employers must ensure assessments are carried out by a 'competent person'. The Abertay Training DSE Assessor Award provides the formal qualification that demonstrates your competence. After qualifying, you can carry out workstation assessments for your own organisation or as a consultant for other organisations.
Your DSE Assessor certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. DSE regulations and ergonomic best practice are updated periodically, so renewal training ensures your knowledge remains current. Abertay Training will send you a renewal reminder as your expiry date approaches.
The most common health problems associated with DSE use include: upper limb disorders (ULDs) such as repetitive strain injury (RSI), carpal tunnel syndrome, and tendinitis; neck and back pain from poor posture; eye strain, headaches, and visual fatigue; and stress and fatigue from poor workstation design or excessive screen time. Many of these conditions are preventable with a properly conducted workstation assessment and appropriate adjustments.
A DSE workstation assessment covers: the display screen (size, resolution, brightness, glare); the keyboard and mouse (position, type, adjustability); the desk and work surface (height, space, cable management); the chair (height, back support, armrests, seat depth); the working environment (lighting, temperature, noise, space); and the individual's working patterns (break frequency, task variety, posture habits). The assessment also considers the individual's specific needs, including any disabilities or health conditions.
Yes — the DSE Regulations apply to home workers who use display screen equipment as a significant part of their normal work. Employers are responsible for ensuring that home workers' workstations are assessed and that appropriate equipment and adjustments are provided. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, home working DSE assessments have become one of the most common types of assessment carried out by DSE Assessors.
DSE assessments should be reviewed whenever there is a significant change to the workstation, the work environment, or the individual's health or working patterns. This includes when a worker moves to a new workstation, when new equipment is introduced, when a worker reports symptoms, or when a worker returns from a period of absence due to a musculoskeletal condition. As a minimum, assessments should be reviewed every 2–3 years.
Yes — remote DSE assessments (conducted via video call or using a self-assessment questionnaire reviewed by the assessor) are increasingly common, particularly for home workers. Your DSE Assessor training covers both in-person and remote assessment methods, and Abertay Training provides assessment templates suitable for both approaches.
