Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET)

Education and Training Award course participants developing teaching and assessment skills UK

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is the nationally recognised entry-level teaching qualification for the further education and skills sector. Formerly known as the PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector), it is the essential starting point for new and aspiring trainers, teachers and workplace coaches.

Our AET course is delivered by experienced educators and provides you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to plan, deliver and assess inclusive learning sessions. Upon completion, you will receive a Level 3 Award in Education and Training regulated by Ofqual — a lifetime qualification with no expiry date.

The course is available at venues across the UK and via live Zoom. Many awarding bodies, including SafeCert, require or recommend that their approved trainers hold a recognised teaching qualification such as the AET.

Frequently Asked Questions

Education and Training Award trainer presenting to adult learners in a classroomThe Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is the nationally recognised entry-level teaching qualification for the further education and skills sector. It is regulated by Ofqual and is the standard qualification for anyone who wishes to teach or train adults in a formal or workplace setting. It replaced the PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) qualification and is accepted by employers and awarding bodies across the UK.
Many awarding bodies, including SafeCert, require or recommend that their approved trainers hold a recognised teaching qualification such as the AET. Holding this qualification demonstrates that you have the knowledge and skills to plan and deliver effective, inclusive training sessions and assess learner progress in a professional manner.
Yes — the AET replaced the PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) qualification. It covers the same core content and is recognised by the same employers and awarding bodies. If you hold a PTLLS certificate, it is still valid, but the AET is the current equivalent qualification.
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is a lifetime qualification — it does not expire. Once you have achieved it, you do not need to renew or refresh it. However, many employers and awarding bodies encourage continuing professional development (CPD) to keep your teaching skills current.
Yes — Abertay Training offers the AET course via live Zoom as well as at venues across the UK. The online course covers exactly the same content as the face-to-face course and leads to the same nationally recognised qualification. You will need a reliable internet connection, a webcam, and a microphone to participate fully.
The AET (Level 3 Award) is the entry-level teaching qualification and is suitable for those who are new to teaching or who teach on a part-time or occasional basis. The CET (Level 4 Certificate) is a more in-depth qualification for those who teach regularly and want to develop their practice further. The CET builds on the AET and includes additional units on curriculum planning, assessment, and professional development. Abertay Training offers both qualifications.
The AET requires you to plan and deliver a short micro-teach session (typically 15–20 minutes) to your peers, demonstrating your ability to plan an inclusive learning session, use a range of teaching and learning strategies, and assess learning. You will receive feedback from your tutor and peers to help you reflect on and improve your practice. The micro-teach is a key part of the assessment and is designed to be a supportive, developmental experience.
The AET opens up a wide range of career opportunities in the further education and skills sector, including: workplace trainer or coach; further education lecturer or tutor; community learning tutor; apprenticeship trainer or assessor; corporate learning and development professional; and subject matter expert delivering accredited qualifications. Many health and safety trainers, first aid trainers, and other specialist trainers use the AET as the foundation for their teaching career.
