Mental Health Trainer Course FAQs

Mental health awareness trainer leading a wellbeing workshop with professionalsThe First Aid for Mental Health (FAMH) Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited mental health first aid training to others. You will learn how to teach delegates to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions, provide initial support, and signpost to professional help. The qualification is accredited by SafeCert and meets the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive's guidance on mental health in the workplace.
While there is currently no specific legal requirement to have a trained Mental Health First Aider in every workplace, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to protect the health (including mental health) of their employees. The HSE's guidance on mental health at work strongly recommends that organisations have trained mental health first aiders, and many large employers now include this as a requirement in their health and safety policies.
Your First Aid for Mental Health Trainer certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Mental health guidance, legislation, and best practice are updated regularly, so renewal training is essential to ensure your knowledge remains current. Abertay Training will send you a renewal reminder as your expiry date approaches.
The course covers a wide range of common mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders (generalised anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, phobias), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. It also covers self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance misuse. Your training covers the signs, symptoms, and appropriate first aid response for each condition.
ALGEE is the five-step mental health first aid action plan: A — Approach, assess, and assist with any crisis; L — Listen and communicate non-judgementally; G — Give support and information; E — Encourage appropriate professional help; E — Encourage other supports. This framework provides a clear, evidence-based structure for providing mental health first aid in any situation.
Yes — the First Aid for Mental Health Trainer Award qualifies you to deliver accredited mental health first aid training to staff in any organisation, including corporate businesses, NHS trusts, schools, universities, charities, and public sector organisations. You will receive all the training materials, assessment tools, and certification resources you need to start delivering training immediately.
A Mental Health First Aider is trained to recognise the signs of mental health problems, provide initial support, and signpost to professional help — similar to how a physical first aider provides initial support for physical injuries before professional medical care is available. A mental health professional (such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, or counsellor) is qualified to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Mental Health First Aiders are not therapists and should not attempt to provide counselling or therapy.
There is no legal requirement specifying the number of Mental Health First Aiders per workplace, but the HSE recommends a similar ratio to physical first aiders — approximately 1 per 100 employees as a starting point, adjusted based on the nature of the work and the mental health risks involved. Many organisations aim for at least 1 Mental Health First Aider per department or team, and some include Mental Health First Aider training as part of their standard management development programme.
